Mississippi native Beth McKee offered fiery-sweet songs of tenacity and promise, sung to a deep southern groove, with honest vocals and a roots-y piano style. We were excited to have Beth McKee at the Modernism Museum Mount Dora on April 9th, for another great concert on the 'Caligari Piano...Southern style!

Woodblock Workshop

Wharton Esherick, a featured artist at Modernism Museum Mount Dora, famously produced many woodblock prints in his lifetime, most notably as illustrations for the books, Rhymes of the Early Jungle Folk and Song of the Broad Axe. This art form can be traced back centuries to the ukiyo-e discipline in Japan, in which countless prints have been made, with subjects ranging from landscapes of the Japanese countryside to kabuki actors. On April 30, the Museum will provide you the opportunity to learn the basics for yourself at a three-hour workshop taught by local artist Jennifer Harper.

Modernism Museum was proud to welcome Mikiko Tanaka as she hosted a Ryu-re (Western sitting) style chanoyu. Attendees joined us at the Museum on May 21st for a SOLD OUT event as she and her husband, Genzo, shared their knowledge and expertise on this ancient tradition. Those who attended had the opportunity to engage in the practice firsthand!  A cup of matcha green tea and a traditional sweet (wagashi) was served.

A Musical History of Jazz

Wendell Castle Caligari Piano Concert

As a part of their concert series, Modernism Museum hosted an evening of jazz performed on the famed "Caligari" Steinway piano, designed and crafted in 1990 by “Modernist Movement Grandfather” Wendell Castle.

Modernism Museum Mount Dora and Main Street Leasing presented an intimate evening of jazz and holiday standards by internationally known jazz musicians Per and Tamara Danielsson on December 19th, 2015. "Christmas on the Caligari" featured jazz pianist Per Danielsson who performed on the Museum's Wendell Castle "Caligari" Piano, accompanied by Tamara on saxophone.
